Hal met Pete Seeger, and became one the founding members of the Clearwater organization. They built a replica of the sloops that sail the Hudson in the 1600s. They Sailed the Hudson to draw attention to the environment and the neeed to clean up the river.  In 1970 they sailed to Washington to lobby Congress on the first Earth Day.
